3 Ways To Stay Motivated to Ride Right Now

It’s tough to get motivated to ride right now with no races or group rides happening… But there are a few ways that I’m finding really get me excited about riding.

Master a new skill

Always wanted to get better at log-hopping on the mountain bike or jumping on your BMX or cornering on your road bike? Now is the time to really work on those skills–especially ones like log hopping that you can do in a backyard and don’t require a lot of space. Picking a skill that excites you and is fun to practice (and one that you can actually get better at!) makes this a lot less boring or intimidating and a whole lot more fun.

Just start pedaling

Make a deal with yourself on those days you really don’t feel like bothering with your ride: Try it for five minutes, and if after a few minutes you still want to go home and turn on Netflix, you can. Once you’re on the bike and riding, you’ll usually remember that you actually enjoy doing it and finish your ride.

Do some bike maintenance

Maybe instead of taking a ride today, you could give your bike some TLC: Take some time and a bucket of warm soapy water and give it a thorough wash, then do things like scrubbing the chain, checking that your tires have air in them, and that your brakes are spinning freely and working. Ask one of your parents for help if you need it!

Get inspired

I personally find that on days I’m not feeling my workout, if I take a few minutes to scroll Instagram and see what other real life Shred Girls are doing, that’s enough to get me out of the house. Check out all of the real life Shred Girls that we’ve profiled over on the Shred Girls Instagram to find ones who inspire you! And of course, you can also read Shred Girls books for some fictional inspo.

Plan some time off

I’m not a huge fan of canceling a ride day-of, but if you’ve been feeling ‘mehhh’ about riding for a  few days in a row, that could be a sign that you need a break. If that’s the case, plan to take next week off the bike and do some fun yoga or hikes with your parents instead, or even just give yourself permission to veg on the couch. After a few days of not riding, you’ll probably start to miss it and want to get back to it!
