Real Life Shred Girl Violet Kraatz Crushes BMX & Slays Singletrack

Violet Kraatz is maybe the coolest young BMX racer I’ve ever seen, so I was super stoked she was willing to share some of her best advice. She and her mom, Jennifer, are some of the most inspirational riders around—love how passionate both of them are about getting out and getting rad on bikes! At 7 years old, Violet is tearing up her local BMX scene, and I think we’ll be seeing A LOT of her in coming years!

Why did you start riding bikes?

It sounded fun!

What is your favorite part?

I like riding around and going fast… And also racing—And getting first place!

What is the hardest part?

Trying not to fall on hard sections, and trying to get into turns first without people pushing you off the track when you’re racing.

What was the best tip or trick you’ve ever been told?

Pedal hard into the first jump [on the pump track]! And don’t pedal in turns!

Proudest accomplishment/favorite race moment?

When I beat someone older than me, who is really fast! I only beat this girl two times and it was exciting.

Have you made friends riding? I’m super shy, so any secrets you have for how to make friends?

Yes! I help tell them how to do stuff and how to BMX, like teaching someone how to manual a table top. If you come here, I’ll give you advice! [Ed. Note: I need to hang out with Violet ASAP so she can teach me!]

Advice for other young girls interested in riding?

Try not to fall on the gate [at the start of BMX races!]

Favorite piece of gear?

My jerseys—I love the color!
