Molly Simpson’s BMX Journey Will Make You Want to Race (and Jump!)

Alberta-based Molly Simpson travels all around Canada as one of the Next-Gen BMX racers—meaning she’s one of the fastest Shred Girls in Canada! She slowed down enough to give us a few pieces of advice for aspiring BMXers.

When did you start riding bikes in general? Why?

I started riding bikes when I was 4, and just loved it ever since. I had a passion for anything with 2 wheels. My grandpa put me on a bike and pushed me down a hill, and that’s how I learned.

When did you decide you wanted to start racing BMX? What made you stick with it?

My dad asked me 6 years ago if I wanted to go try BMX. I knew that my cousin did and was ranked 2nd in the world. So I wanted to give it a shot! The moment I saw the track, I knew that this was what I was gonna do for the rest of my life. My dedication and drive to be successful was what made me stick with it. Just the feeling of riding is the best. I also love the people in the sport, I have made so many good friends through BMX.

Favorite part about riding?

I love the adrenaline rush that you get when your riding the track. The feeling of jumping is definitely my favourite. I just love to go fast on a bike

Least favorite part about riding?

My least favourite part about riding is the nerves I get before each race. But that is just happens naturally and I preform well under pressure.

Have you made friends through racing? (If so, any tips for talking to new people? I’m always scared of that—so is the main character in the first Shred Girls book!)

I have made some of my best friends through racing. My tip is to just be your self. Over time you will slowly become friends with your competitors.

Coolest trick or accomplishment you’ve had with riding?

  • making semi finals in 2017 in Rock hill South Carolina, as well in Baku Azerbaijan in 2018 world championships.
  •  making the Olympic development team ( Next Gen )
  • 3X Canadian champion
  • jumping the pro set at USA bmx grands
  • recently podiumed at my first junior woman race in Rock Hill South Carolina
  • my goal is to make the main for Junior woman at World championships this year

What does a week of training/riding look like for you?

Monday, track, sprints, lift
Tuesday, rollers
Wednesday, track, lift , sprints
Thursday, rollers, track
Friday track, lift
Weekend, ride

Always on the bike!

Best tip for someone your age or younger who’d love to get started riding/racing, but doesn’t know anyone else to ride with?

Just go out there and have fun and enjoy the ride. You will make friends along the way.

Best tip for tackling a scary section in a bike park, i.e the pump track for someone super new to riding?

My tip is to just turn your mind off and just send it.

Absolute favorite piece of gear?

My bike is my favourite, I got a custom painted Wonder Woman theme bike. I love my sponsor – Daylight Cycles
