Emilly Johnston is rad. She’s also FAST on the mountain bike—she finished second in her category (under-18 women) at Canadian MTB Nationals this year, and after her race, we caught up and I knew I wanted to get her on this site, because she’s definitely a Shred Girl IRL!
Free your brakes, free your mind
I went on a youth shop ride when I was eight. My dad took me out and right from the start I was hooked. I was always wanting to go out riding and dragging my family along with me.
My favorite part is being out in nature with friends and family. Getting to go on adventures, explore and push myself to try more challenging trails and features.
I think that the hardest part can be staying motivated in the winter. When it’s cold and rainy sometimes I feel like I’d rather curl up with a book inside rather than go out for a ride in the cold or ride inside on the trainer. ( I don’t really enjoy riding on the spin bikes 🙁 )
I love the atmosphere! When you go to races you get such a good vibe. Especially the island cup events. Everyone is stoked to be out there riding their bikes. It really makes you feel like you’re part of a community.
Free your brakes, free your mind! Hahaha. No I think eyes up would be another one, you go where your eyes go (sometimes into the bushes if you’re not focusing on the trail 😂)
I think my proudest accomplishment so far has been getting upgraded to Junior at national championships or getting to be a part of Naked Factory Racing.
I really want to go to the XC 2019 World Championships and I want to place in the top three. I also want to improve my technical skills and make sure that before everything else I keep having a blast!!
Have fun! Just because there aren’t other girls to ride with doesn’t mean you can’t keep riding! Go with the boys because they will push you and make you a better rider. Then when you meet other girls who ride it will be even more motivating and inspiring.
Just jump right in and say hello! At events other cyclists will be around and lots of people are friendly and will come chat with you. I always try to put myself out there and make new connections and riding buddies!
