Right now, it’s a scary time, with COVID-19 causing schools to close, group rides to stop, and forcing us to practice social distancing or self-isolation. I was thinking about a few Shred Girl IRL answers to questions about how they tackle scary obstacles. When I asked that question, of course I meant ‘how do you get over a scary obstacle on your mountain bike,’ or ‘how do you overcome being scared of talking to new people.’ But as I looked back on the answers, I realized they’re very relevant to helping all of us deal with our fears about what’s happening in the world right now. It won’t take the fear away, but maybe one of these quotes can help you get through the day a little easier.
Kennedy Goodall’s reminder that a bike ride can help keep you calm is a great one! (Even if you have to pedal on the trainer inside, moving will help you stay calm.)
“Really, just start riding your bike around! It’s so calming and it clears your mind. It’s so therapeutic,” says Abbey O’Brien.
Right now more than ever, Kira Zazzi’s point about paying attention to your mental health matters. Talk to your parents or a trusted adult if you need more support!
When you’re scared… “All you have to do is take a deep breath in and let it out, and just believe that you can do it. Because if you don’t, it will get in your head and then you will be scared and won’t try it.” Sure, Erin Kromis’s advice is about a scary obstacle on the trail, but right now, we could all use a moment to pause and practice our deep breathing.
Right now, bookworm and cyclist Bridget Smith can’t ride outside, but she can read A LOT, so that’s what she’s doing. Read her interview (and the one she did with me!) and check out her blog to stay on top of the best books to read right now!
Zelda Walsh tells her fears to back off: “I made this up, but it’s a good saying: ‘Forget your fears. Make them fear you.’ I think about that when I get scared.”
And the last reminder is today’s quote:
“My favorite part about riding is being on a team so that you know you have something to care about,” says Erin Kromis. Even if you can’t ride with your team or club right now, stay in touch with your fellow Shred Girls for support! Ride together virtually, say hi, send silly memes, just stay in touch!
PS: Make sure you’re using this time off of school to get enough sleep! It’s one of the best ways to deal with stress.
