When we interviewed Emily Kane last year, we thought she was rad. Riding with her at the NJ NICA race back in May confirmed that. Now, the incoming college freshman shares what she learned in her time with NICA and how she’s still Shred-Girl-ing going forward!
Three years ago I knew nothing about mountain biking. I’ve learned a lot since then, and I have so much more confidence because I joined NICA.
What I’ll miss most about NICA is the community. There’s a certain spirit of positivity and support that I have found nowhere else.
I will attend the University Notre Dame. I intend to study science and music. Indiana is pretty flat, but the campus is bike-able, so I’m bringing my bike!
I forgot to bring a tutu! I started a tradition with the girls on my team where we all wear skirts for the last race of the season. Luckily there are a lot more girls on my team than when I started, so I hope they’ll carry on the tradition.
Say hi to people! Compliment them! They may want to talk to you, too, but might be hesitant to make the first move.
The best moment of the 2019 season was seeing my teammates and coaches be recognized for being fabulous human beings.
Although grades are important, they are ultimately not how you’ll define yourself. Strive to do your best in both school and other activities. If something makes you truly unhappy, it’s not worth doing.
