Cyclocrossing Real Life Shred Girl Riley Pearman is Here to Make Friends (And Crush!)

Riley Pearman is the shred-iest 10-year-old we’ve ever seen—and she loves cyclocross. She’s been absolutely killing it in North Carolina’s cyclocross series, and as a road racer turned cyclocross fanatic, she has some amazing tips about dialing her race technique—and making friends along the way. (And check her Shred Girls podium cap in this pic!)

When did you start riding?

I started riding when I was four but I got interested in cycling when I was about eight.

And when did you start racing?

I started racing and riding more seriously when I was nine (last year)

What’s your favorite part of cycling?

One of my favorite things about cycling is going to cross races and hanging out with my team (Evo Devo) after my races.

OK, what’s the least fun part?

My least favorite thing about cycling is waking up early for races since I am the second group to race.

What’s your best tip for new riders?

One of my favorite things about racing/cycling is meeting new friends and even though this is only my second season being on a team. I’ve met a ton of really nice people. One of the best tips I use is that I ask some one (one of my coaches, or older girl) to pre-ride with me and maybe show me some good lines or tricks.

Biggest riding accomplishment?

One of my accomplishments was riding 111 miles in a 24 hour charity ride to raise money for cancer. And it’s not really a trick but something interesting I learned how to do this summer was to ride aero bars and I got to use them for my time trials races that I did at the Charlotte Motor speedway!

How often do you ride?

I try to train at least once a week if not twice but not more than that because I’m not too serious about it—and then I race on the weekends.

Fave gear?

My favorite piece of bike gear is my skin suit and my red helmet.

Who are your favorite pro cyclists?

Some of my favorite cyclists are Ellen Noble, Allison and Hannah Arensmen, and Stephen Hyde.
