Taking a Closer Look at Tryouts

School tryouts may be the first introduction to youth sport for many… But have you ever stopped to ask yourself what is stopping some kids from trying out for the team while others don’t think twice? What makes some kids excited, while other kids don’t even consider signing up for tryouts?
Asking “Why Can’t They Play?” seems like a simple question, but it has an incredibly complex answer. All kids should be able to play, but for some, something as simple as a tryout poster hanging in the school hall is just another reminder of why they can’t play. In “Why Can’t They Play?,” a graphic novel created by the  team at RE.sport, researchers take a closer look at some of the main ways that a soccer tryout can exclude many kids—and why that’s wrong, and what kids, coaches and educators can do about it.
This free short version offers a sample of why some kids often feel excluded, as well as a solution that educators, coaches, and even students can keep in mind heading into tryout season. The more kids you bring to tryouts, the more the sport can grow.
